Pharmacy Technician

Duties include but not limited to:
Customer Service:
Demonstrates courteous, friendly, cooperative, efficient, effective and professional interaction with patients, patient caregivers, colleagues, and hospital staff. Maintains responsibility for complex technical and automated support functions requiring extensive knowledge of formulary medications and facility controlled substance and investigational policy and procedures. Reviews and interprets patient medication orders and utilizes knowledge to alert pharmacists to potential problems/issues. Controlled Substances:
Primary responsibility for the handling of all outpatient controlled substances and for the timely filling, on a daily basis of all outpatient controlled substance prescriptions:
window, mail, or overnight delivery. Maintains complete vault and drug security when working in vault. Interprets orders, assembles materials, prepares, packages, labels, completes required documentation, includes required handouts, and sets up all finished controlled substance prescriptions in an organized manner for check by pharmacy. Utilizes knowledge base to alert pharmacist to potential issues, including name alerts, product shortages, and computer entry discrepancies. Reviews and interprets patient medication orders and utilizes knowledge to alert pharmacists to potential problems/issues, maintaining accurate inventories of all controlled substances as dispensed, utilizing a perpetual inventory system and ensures secure distribution of non-controlled items maintained in the vault while demonstrating attention to detail and persistence in investigating and solving inventory adjustment issues. utilizing a perpetual inventory system Experience with pharmacy automation equipment to ensure its formulary is current and accurate. Add new medications/products with changes in medical therapy guidelines. Ensure automation of workflows is maximized for safety. Maintains security and provides limited access for individual users. Conducts a full controlled inventory, and reconciliation every 72 hours. Works with Controlled Substance inspection officials on a monthly basis. Reports all count discrepancies to supervisor immediately, and initiates prescription and record reviews. Inspects each dosage form dispensed for damage or discoloration, and removes damaged or expired products from stock. Provides supervisor with name, manufacturer, lot number, and expiration dates of all damaged or expired controlled substances needing to be removed from inventory, so that balance adjustment can be performed. Assists with securely packaging all damaged, expired, or returned controlled substances awaiting destruction. 1. Informs supervisor with name, manufacturer, lot number and expiration when newly opened, sealed containers contain a greater or lesser quantity than noted on the package, so that balance adjustment can be performed. Able to manage the operation process, maintenance, troubleshooting and oversight of all Pharmacy Mission Act / Non-VA Care approved prescriptions; also willing to perform research when needed and function with a high degree of autonomy with all activities subject to quality of service measurements. Administrative:
Assists with special projects as requested by Chief of Pharmacy, Outpatient Supervisor, or staff RPhs. Assists with scheduling/rescheduling issues, and coordinates workflow with assigned vault pharmacist. Assists with development and implementation of departmental polices/procedures. Assists in analysis of workflow processes for improved utilization of staff. Provides for routine filing and retrieval of hard copy documents (Schedule II prescriptions and VISTA fill documents, Schedule III-V controlled substance dispensing receipts, vault inventories, and controlled substance receipt logs. Experienced receiving scheduled medications and verifying them against invoices for correct quantity, lot, and expiration date. Work Schedule:

Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification:
Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency:
Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Determinations:

Experience:
One year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk ( ):

Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems. References:

Requires frequent movement within work areas, regular and recurring bending, stooping, and stretching, standing for long periods, and lifting up to 40 pounds. Requires manual dexterity and acute hearing.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
