Legal Assistant (Office Automation)

If selected, you will serve as a senior legal assistant responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) by providing a variety of technical assistance services in support of the United States Attorney's Office, Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDEFT). Cases involve investigations of international and significant domestic narcotics trafficking and money laundering organizations and prosecutions under Federal drug trafficking, money laundering and related financial, tax, racketeering and frauds law. Duties include:
using comprehensive knowledge of legal processes, regulations, techniques, and procedures related to Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force investigations and prosecutions; providing substantive legal support assistance to attorneys in complex investigations and prosecutions of domestic and international narco-trafficking; perform specialized legal assistance involving U.S. Attorney's Office investigations conducted with various Federal and local law enforcement entities; acting as a legal assistance subject matter expert and provide training, guidance and technical assistance to other legal support staff; processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels; conducting legal research using various legal and non-legal databases and websites; conducting non-complex research of legislation, statutes, regulations, and court cases related to a legal specialty area; and aid in preparing and organizing evidence for production as discovery and use in trial. GS-8:
To be qualified at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as performing legal work which demonstrates a basic knowledge of legal research and the ability to interpret legal decisions. Providing substantive, independent legal support assistance to attorneys in complex investigations and prosecutions; conducting research, analysis and evaluation of data; drafting, examining and processing a variety of legal documents and correspondence; using a variety of electronic or manual filing systems to acquire and store information; searching and reviewing legal references, case files, and other sources for information and data. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP):
The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
