Manager, Quality & Weld Engineering

Job Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to be responsible for reviewing customers specifications for welding, writing Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS) and procedure qualification records (PQR) to ensure welding code and quality standards are met as well as develop, implement and maintain an effective quality system. This will include preparation of documents, maintenance of databases and use of the quality reporting system for document control, audit and corrective and preventive action purposes. The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of ASME and code welding standards and will be able to troubleshoot welding issues. In addition they need to also oversee all inspection processes and compliance with customer quality plans as equipment is manufactured. The primary purpose of this role is to be The successful candidate estimates and purchases welding consumables, prepares reports and interacts with third party inspectors. The incumbent is responsible for motivating, mentoring and training personnel in his/her charge. This leader works efficiently and accurately and is also able to communicate well with others in the sales, proposal, design, manufacturing, quality and procurement departments. This position involves both domestic and international travel of a maximum of 25%. The incumbent works under general supervision of the Plant Operations Manager, and must be able to manage other welding technicians.
The primary purpose of this position is
To manage the quality system for the Heat Transfer organization. Member of senior management responsible for development of long term quality plans.
To manage the quality assurance process for all SPX Heat Transfer product offerings.
To review and execute new equipment contract specifications, generate quality inspection and test plans for new equipment and site construction services, and prepare and submit procedures to customers.
To audit and approval quality systems of new and existing suppliers, subcontract facilities and contractors.
To coordinate and monitor the inspection and witness test by SPX Heat Transfer inspectors and coordinate customer visits to subcontractors.
To select, assign, train and evaluate subordinate personnel, recommend or initiate associated personnel actions and determine and recommend organization alignment and staffing requirements for the department.
To recommend the operating budget for the department and administer the budget, monitoring actual expenditures in comparison to budget, on a continuing basis.
To review customers specifications for welding, QC requirements and pricing for quotes
To determine what ASME code WPS' require development for projects and the additional costs associated with the specification as it applies to QC and Welding
To write ASME Sec. IX WPS' and PQR's for Sec. 1, Sec. VIII, HEI, IBR and PED codes for pressure welding. Apply API 934, 934C and NACE standards for fabrication
To prepare technical reports, as required, for customers when welding issues on projects need to be addressed
To review sub-contractors WPS' and PQR's for adherence to the ASME Code and customer specifications
To work with project engineers concerning weld joint designs, ASME Code requirements, CVN low temperature requirements, base material types, PWHT requirements, assigning WPS' to weld maps and reviewing drawings
To troubleshoot shop welding issues (ex. strip clad overlay, orbital tube welding, etc.)
To manage welding technicians assigned to the welding department
To oversee and determine welder and welding operator requirements for testing and ASME Code documentation
To estimate and purchase special welding consumables for projects
To prepare and evaluate customer tube to tube sheet mock-ups for submittal
To evaluate and approve newest welding processes as they apply to pressure vessel fabrication to implement cost savings
To monitor production CVN testing on projects
To prepare instructions to the lab for required testing on WPS', customer mock-ups and metallurgical shop issues
To complete additional tasks As needed
Qualifications
Qualified ISO 9001 Auditor or Lead Auditor certification required
Solid product knowledge and technical expertise a plus
Demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others
Knowledge of process improvement techniques (Six-Sigma certification preferred)
Certified Weld Inspection (CWI) designation preferred
Knowledge of ASME Sec. IX , Section VIII and AWS code requirements
Knowledge of API and NACE standards
Knowledge of non-ferrous and ferrous base materials and how they apply to the process and power industry
Ability to interact with 3rd party inspectors as required
read and interpret fabrication drawings and customer specifications.
Strong computer abilities (Word, Excel, Microsoft Access, electronic quality systems)
Working knowledge of SAP or other ERP system
Ability to handle a large volume of work and perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels both internal and external to the company
Organizational and time management skills
Ability to instruct and work well with welding personnel and others
Ability to learn required computer programs
Excellent presentation skills with the ability to prepare presentations for both internal and external business situations
Education and Experience
Associate's degree in Welding Engineering
Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering preferred
At least 10 years progressively responsible welding experience
Minimum 7 years related supervisory experience in a manufacturing organization, with considerable experience in a pressure-vessel manufacturing organization (R/S Stamp work is a plus)
Experience with ISO 9001 or other quality systems
Comprehensive knowledge of ASME Code Section VIII, Div I
